Bucket List

i just filled this in for my high school alumni so its current.
The only thing i would add is my favourite book of all time is : THE TALES OF GENJI

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.”

Sydney Leong

If not for the generousity of the Leong family I would not have achieved 'The Deal' which sealed my reputation as Global Deal Maker Extraordinare in Hong Kong.   This is no small feat as Hong Kong is well known for creative deal making

My Shek - O acquisition of former Bank of China governor's property for son of Li Ka-Shing, is a deal that all the major developers covet but no one could secure a deal on this prime waterfront which was eventually developed with a 'west coast' inspired structure.

Sidney Leong was an early adopter of Canadian properties including the illustrius Royal Bank of Canada building in Downtown Vancouver.
Royal Bank of Canada building in Vancouver B.C.
The Leong portfolio of properties is Colliers oldest and most valued overseas real estate account.

Thanks to the Leong family for raising the bar for me professionally and personally.  I am privileged to have the opportunity to knowthe late Mr. Leong.

Grand Wailea Resort

I love this picture.  Friends from around the world gathered at the Grand Wailea Resort on Maui to celebrate the wedding of our mutual friends & family.

GSIC purchase of Grand Wailea Resort

ABR Properties, an entity controlled by GIC Real Estate – the property division of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, has acquired the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in the US (pictured), according to reports.   The 84-year old property was reportedly bought in February, although the price wasn't disclosed due to a court order.   The 740-room resort is one of three major resorts that a US bankruptcy court has allowed GIC to buy, along with the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa in Hawaii and La Quinta Resort & Club in Palm Springs, California.   Biltmore was sold by an investor group known as MSR Resort Golf Course, led by New York-based hedge fund Paulson & Co. and Winthrop Realty Trust.   GIC also assumed the existing management agreements for all three resorts, managed by Waldorf Astoria – a luxury brand of Hilton Worldwide.    -- 2013 May 16    PROPERTY GURU SG

Hong Kong

Yes, that was me on the flyover to the Mandarin Hotel.   Landed solidly In Hong Kong hosted by oenephile friend Ivy.     We sampled the following wines that evening.

Tignanello 2007
Mormoreto 2007
Il Borro 2007
Oreno 2001
Oreno 2006
Oreno 2009-10

To top it off this memorable evening, the owner of the Italian vineyard came by to personally invite us to visit with him.     Only in Hong Kong, at Domani, which is owned by St. George's ol' boy, Peter Lam, would this have happened.   Maybe at the Dorchester in London.
Lunch hosted by good friend atop the Prince's Building in Central at Sevva was another exquisite experience.

Another special meal at a hide-a-way in Shui On Centre in Wanchai on Harbour Road.    I publicly humuliated self by not knowing how to open the door upon arrival, with a lineup of patrons behind me at Suzuike, but it was worth it.   Here's a sample menu.

A day trip to Macau to lunch at the Clube Militar de Macau.

Hong Kong is not lacking in talent and stands out as a culinary capital for foodies of the world.      One just has to have curiousity, this city is a hub of inquisitive minds who have the resources to do things well.

Andrea Eng temporarily delayed from $2-billion cash-raising job

Andrea Eng, the former Vancouver real estate deal-cutter, is temporarily grounded here from the Hong Kong-Boston-New York circuit she's been flying for Victor Li of the billionaire clan.

Now, Victor, whose dad Li Ka-shing tops the Hutchison Whampoa conglomerate, has put $800 million into its Asian Property Fund with the proviso that $1.2 billion be raised by Eng and Cynthia Suen, who first rolled Taiwanese dough into Concord Pacific's Expo-lands redevelopment here.
Eng, who sometimes stomps the U.S. with Hutchison Whampoa CFO and former Stikeman Elliott law firm hotshot Frank Sixt's wife Anne, is also assembling Sino-U.S. deals. She sounded encouraged by China's recent acceptance into the World Trade Organization.      -  By Malcolm Parry      VANCOUVER SUN    September 20, 2001

    Celebration! Jack Lim Eng's 90th

We recently celebrated Dad's 90th and he was pleased with the photos we selected.

Reminding him that he has accomplished so very much in times that were as challenging as now.

One of my long friend & colleague Avtar Bains travelled with his lovely Mom Devinder and Dad and I, and we sampled Hong Kong and Singapore when both our parents could.   Devinder is in heaven now - Surinder, Krishna and I celebrated her birthday this year.

We are so blessed to have experiences like this.

    Chapter Lost

A Sonoma County jury convicted Phang in 1988 of first degree murder in the premeditated, execution style slaying of his brother-in-law, Johnny Fong.   On May 21, 1987, Mr. Fong was found lying face down next to his vehicle in Petaluma.

Mr. Fong had traveled from Hillsborough to Petaluma to attend a pre-arranged meeting with a friend.   He was shot twice to the head.   His Rolex watch and wallet were missing.

Mr. Phang was stopped one week later at the Canadian border with his brother and a friend and his vehicle was searched.   The gun used in Mr. Fong’s murder was found in the car as well as Mr. Fong’s Rolex watch.   The gun was stolen in March of 1987 in a burglary of Mr. Phang’s former employer in Missouri while Phang lived in Missouri.   Two hours after the burglary Phang attempted to cash checks stolen in that burglary.

Mr. Phang remains in jail and has been denied parole several times as he shows no remorse.

Photo and article by Felicity Lu Wang  --  31 January 2012  SING TAO

    Year of the Dragon

Happy New Year! Today we start a new year - the Year of the Dragon and the Vancouver Sun ran an article on UBC's project on Chinese Canadian stories which reminds me how quickly time has passed.

The days of ol' Vancouver Chinatown remain dear to me as still many of my best friends are from the days when I attended Lord Strathcona school where both my parents had the same Grade 6 teacher - Miss Foster!

The UBC project is an important one to remind us that it wasn't so easy for Chinese in those days. Both my parents were born in Vancouver but my Father went back to China for his formative years and did not return to Canada until he was a teenager. Neither parent got to finish high school because they had to work and contribute to their family. They worked hard doing mutliple jobs for a better life for my brother and I. If not for their hard work ethic, we would not be where we are today. We made it to Downtown Vancouver even though our parents were not given such opportunity.

I remember still that at Colliers where I subsequently became a Vice President bringing in the global wealth from Asia into North America when the investment bankers weren't paying attention to Asians, the words from the Chair and Managing Director were "We've never had a lady in this company since 1898, why should we have one now?". If not for the forefronters like the late Milton Wong and David Lam, Chinese would not have the same prominence that we do now.

My life has been full of firsts and I am grateful to Roseanne Sia of the UBC Chinese Canadian Stories project whose father helped me to translate this press clipping from the Miss Universe Pageant in Acapulco. It says:

Cold? Canada surprised by sending an authentic Eskimo that has also distinguished herself for her kindness and good manners. Her name: Andrea Leslie Eng.

Ha! How far we have come since then.
